Jelly Roll Racing!
Ready ... set ... go!
1When and where?
August 1, 2024 General Meeting
Ehlers Event Center
8150 Knott Avenue
Buena Park, CA 90620
2What Happens?
We're making quilts using the Jelly Roll Race method of strip piecing. It's FAST! and FUN! Prices will be awarded to the fastest teams and all team members. Grand prizes will be awarded at the November 7 meeting for the favorite finished quilts.
All contest quilts will be donated to Acacia for our Tea, Opportunity Quilt, or Philanthropy, as determined by the Board. All finished tops will be eligible for finished quilt awards. Backing fabric, sashing and/or border fabric will be provided from the Acacia stash or you may provide your own. Batting will also be provided.
3How do I participate?
Sign up a team of 3 to 4 team members. Give your team a name at signup!
To make the Jelly Roll Race quilt you will need:
- One Jelly Roll (40 strips of fabric that measure 2.5” x 41-45”) or cut your own. An additional accent piece (square, rectangle, triangle, or parallelogram) not exceeding 6”, may be sewn to each strip in advance. A few Jelly rolls will be available at sign-up.
- Your team may sign up to go to storage and choose fabrics and/or backing. Batting will be available at the September meeting, or sooner if needed.
- Matching or neutral thread. You need two full bobbins and extras just in case!
- Full-size scissors and small scissors.
- Two sewing machines in case one has a problem during the contest. Bring machine accessories and tools.
- Iron and board or pad.
4How do you jelly roll race?
- Two people can sew at once while joining strips end to end if desired
- Strips can be joined straight across or diagonally
- Accent pieces may be added while joining (or in advance), if desired.
- As strips are being sewn, one team member should press seams open or all one direction.
- When all strips are sewn together end to end, cut 17” to 20” off of last piece and discard (Important!). Keep out or remove twists before joining.(Also important).
- Starting with joined end strips, sew strips together the whole length of doubled strips with 1/4” seam. Stitch length must be at least 2.2” and not be over 2.5”.
- Sew strips together to end and cut open, being careful to cut straight across.
- Place the now double row ends right sides together and stitch together again, forming 4 rows
- Again cut end open, then place 4 rows together and sew, forming 8 rows
- Continue until fabric is all attached. Cut last row open, then check for any missed seams. Seams must repaired before quilt is considered finished, so don’t rejoice until you check!.
- The Jelly Roll Quilts will measure approximately 54' X 64”, or larger if accent pieces were added.
Completed quilt must be ready for judging at November Meeting. Applique, sashing and borders may be added, or quilt may be cut and rejoined. Quilt must have batting, backing, binding, and be quilted and labeled on back with Acacia Quilt Guild of O.C., November 2018, and team members names. Quilts must be quilted to be eligible for prizes.
